Insure Your Horse

Mortality Policy

Mortality Coverage on your horse is like a life insurance policy on a person. Coverage is triggered upon the death of the animal, even intentional destruction, as long as no exclusion applies and all the conditions in the policy are met.

Coverage may be written on horses from 24 hours old up to 15 years of age. The premium charge will be based on the age, use, value and condition of your horse. Insurance premiums will be based on a percentage of the value of the horse. This is a standard approach so the variability amongst insurance companies is in what type of coverage is offered, underwriting, and value determination.

Recreational Use

Typically recreational owners are interested in Mortality, Emergency Colic and Medical Coverage. In many cases Emergency Colic and Medical coverage are the primary concerns. Veterinary bills can add up quickly as every horse owner knows.

Mortality insurance is required in order to secure Medical and Emergency Colic coverage. Each of these coverages will carry a separate limit of insurance. Medical coverage will typically have a co-payment and supplement any existing emergency colic coverage.

Expect to pay 2% to 6% of the value of the horse for the Mortality portion of the policy. A minimum premium of $200 annually is common. Medical coverage will vary based on the limit of insurance chosen and some carriers will offer Medical coverage that exceeds the Mortality limit placed on a horse.
